Coo-Mon: Creating Differently
Partager
  • Coo-Mon makes accessories mainly with eco-responsible textiles.
  • The company maximizes its material with its products and tries to recycle its unusable scraps.
  • Its corn-based packaging is treated appropriately in Montreal sorting centers.

Inspired by trends and colors from Africa, Quebec, and Guadeloupe, Coo-Mon creates accessories rich in vibrant colors. Opting mostly for natural and recycled textiles, as well as fabric scraps from other companies, Ingrid Agbato, the founder of the company, creates durable accessories infused with her Benin origins.

The production of accessories presents a considerable advantage when it comes to waste management. At Coo-Mon, fabric utilization is maximized as small accessory patterns easily fit into fabric scraps, minimizing material waste. The production model is designed to reduce inventory and avoid excess.

Packaging is a concerning element for the company. Coo-Mon opts for compostable and recyclable packaging options that can be properly processed in Montreal’s recycling centers. One challenge for Coo-Mon is confirming the actual end use of the material, considering the recycling and composting constraints of its municipality.

In an effort to minimize waste, Coo-Mon participated in the "Creating Differently" training offered by  Vestechpro, a research and innovation center in clothing. The organization's fiber shredder can give a second life to unusable fabric scraps from Coo-Mon. However, this machine does have its limitations. It can only process natural textiles made of 100% the same fiber to reduce them again. Thus, recycling is restricted to certain fabrics for this type of machinery.

Following this resource-sharing possibility, Coo-Mon is exploring opportunities to collaborate with different companies to enhance its journey towards eco-responsibility. For example, the company aims to explore collective delivery of primary materials (with other companies) to reduce transportation impact.

Coo-Mon's ecological progress is an excellent example of a company that incorporates realistic changes into its operations through research and analysis. To date, the company aims to continue on this path by adding simple actions that make a significant difference!
